NMD
What is the difference between an ND, NHD, NMD, and PhD?
The ND (Doctor of Naturopathy) and NHD (Doctor of Natural Health) are considered practitioner focused doctorate degrees, for those who desire to focus on practicing and consulting. ND and NMD are considered synonymous and recognized across the USA. The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is more academic, for those most interested in research, writing, and lecturing.
What is the scope of practice for a naturopathic physician?
The naturopathic physician (ND or NMD) will blend traditional and holistic medical practices, depending on applicable state laws.
In most regulated states, the ND / NMD are able to diagnoses illnesses, order and perform laboratory studies / diagnostic tests,
and incorporate multiple patient related treatments. In most licensed states, malpractice / liability insurance is available.
These can include, but may not be limited to, the utilization of:
Acupuncture
Botanical Medicine
Nutritional Medicine
Homeopathic Medicine
Physical Medicine
Natural Childbirth / OBGYN
Family Practice Medicine
Minor Surgical Procedures
Physiotherapy Prescriptive Drugs and Controlled Substances
Some states that are unregulated, an ND / NMD is considered a Naturopath and not a physician. In most of these states, the ND can offer limited nutritional advice only. For specific and state governed/licensed rights, please visit the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians website at www.naturopathic.org.
How does the JTC advanced naturopathic doctor program compare to other schools?
JTC is unique in many ways. Our advanced program for first degree professionals (D.C., M.D., D.O.) allow students to attend our 27 month academic and clinical program, leading to the NMD degree while continuing a full-time practice and supporting family commitments. Students must attend lecture classes 4 days a month (Wednesday – Saturday) and complete clinical internship rotations at their convenience. Clinical internship rotations allow students to experience direct patient care with ND’s, MD’s, and DO’s in outpatient clinics and in-patient hospital environments. JTC also affiliates with leading universities in Florida, New York, Missouri, Texas, Idaho, Arizona and California, where we conduct classes on satellite campuses. Finally, prior to graduation, JTC focuses on preparing the NMD for national board examinations, new or expanded career opportunities, and updated business skills for preparation into the complex world of healthcare delivery services.
What states license NMDs?
Please refer to the updated map of the U.S. which highlights individual states, licenses and pending legislation.

No. Naturopathy is growing in public awareness, thus more states are requiring licensure, but all do not require it at this time.
Do insurance companies cover services by a NMD?
Yes. Many insurance carriers cover naturopathic medicine in the US and Canada. However, many companies and/or individual states restrict coverages. Some states, including Alaska, Connecticut, and Washington, require insurance companies to cover services by NMD’s. Additional states, including Arizona are beginning to cover naturopathic services. JTC strives to assist our students equal recognition by their appropriate state insurance companies.
What are graduates doing with an NMD degree?
NMD’s have several options, including working in solo or group practices with MD’s, DO’s, DC’s, and other allied professionals including acupuncturists, nutritionists, and massage therapists. Recently, we are witnessing that some NMD’s choose to specialize in such areas as family practice, and natural childbirth. Some NMD’s may choose to pursue research and consulting positions for vitamin, supplement and natural food companies. Academics is always an option for the NMD as more students are entering the field everyday.
